Leadership Lessons

Lesson 1

Leaders need trustworthy helpers.

Think of the people you trust to help you. People like Mom and Dad, Grandma and Grandpa, your school teacher, and your Taekwondo instructor.

If you did not have them to help you, then learning, growing up and getting things done every day would be a lot harder!

You trust them to help you because you know they love and care for you. They want to keep you safe and help you be a winner. They understand what you need and where you're going.

That's why they are the best kind of followers or helpers to have: they share your goals and care about you!

Not everyone is a good helper, though. What if someone doesn't care about your goals? Or someone who breaks a his promises? You might have to do his work for him so the whole team doesn't fail. That's not fair, is it? Leaders need helpers we can trust.

"A chain is only as strong as its weakest link."

Trusting is a key part of Leadership. We need other people to help us, so we want them to be honest, reliable, and good at their jobs. Sometimes other people know how to fix things or have the tools that we need, so we trust them and put them to work for us.

As a growing Leader, you will learn how to build a team of trustworthy helpers who share your goals. The first step is the subject of our next Leadership Lesson.

By having more helpers, we can usually reach bigger and better goals, because "there's strength in numbers." Only a few have walked on the moon, but it took thousands of people working together to send them there.

Would you like to lead a team to the stars one day?

Three things Tiny Tigers can do to Build Trust In Others

  1. Follow the Golden Rule
Treat other kids the way you want to be treated. Consider their needs and feelings first, and they will be kind and courteous in return. Use good manners, follow the rules, share, take turns, smile, say thanks, give compliments, and soon other people will follow your lead! Courtesy is contagious!
  2. Say "Thank You"
Think of some things your "helpers" (like Mom or Dad) do for you, that you trust them to take care of every day. For example, making your meals, taking you places, buying you clothes and stuff like that. Now, go Say "Thank You" to them for being such reliable and trustworthy helpers!
  3. Share the Credit
The next time you get a compliment on a job well done, pass it on! Tell the people who helped you reach your goal that they were a key part of your success. They will know that you appreciate their help and continue to work hard on your team.

Trust has two sides: Just as every leader needs reliable helpers, the leader has to be reliable and trustworthy too. We must have integrity so our helpers can trust us to lead them to victory!
